hank you my friend Maj Marty Hogan for making us aware that October 26 is the anniversary of the birth of American physician and a former vice admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps Regina Marcia Benjamin who served as the 18th Surgeon General of the United States.

In 2002, Dr. Dr. Benjamin became the first African-American female president of a state medical society in the United States when she assumed leadership of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama a position she held until 2003. Dr. Benjamin has forged a career that was recognized by a broad spectrum of organizations and publications. In July 2009, Dr. Benjamin was appointed as the 18th United States Surgeon General and served a four-year term. Dr. Benjamin served as the United States Surgeon General and Vice Admiral of the U.S. Public Health Service from 2009 to 2013. She is the recipient of 24 honorary degrees. In 1998, she was the United States recipient of the Nelson Mandela Award for Health and Human Rights. She received the 2000 National Caring Award, which was inspired by Mother Teresa and was recognized with the Papal Honor Pro Ecclesia et Ponticifice from Pope Benedict XVI. In 2008, she was honored with a MacArthur Genius Award Fellowship. In 2011, Dr. Benjamin became the recipient of the Chairman's Award at the 42nd NAACP Image Awards. In May 2013, Reader's Digest ranked her No. 22 of the 100 Most Trusted People in America. Dr. Benjamin received her B.S. in Chemistry from Xavier University, M.D. from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and her M.B.A. from Tulane University and also attended Morehouse School of Medicine."

I am a strong supporter of many of the same issues as Admiral Benjamin, rural healthcare, preventing child sexual abuse and healthy aging.
