Good Red Friday morning RP. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Tranquility Base Panorama." The Apollo 11 lunar module Eagle safely touched down on July 20, 1969, landing near the southwestern corner of the Moon's Mare Tranquillitatis (Sea of Tranquility). This view of what became known as Tranquility Base is constructed from the historic photos taken on the lunar surface. Astronaut Neil Armstrong is on the far left, and casts a long shadow with the Sun at his back and the Eagle resting about 60 meters away. The 30 meter-diameter Little West crater is to the right, and the top of the camera intended for taking stereo close-ups of the lunar surface is in the foreground.
