This is a revision to my original. Even though this is a Civilian Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations, I worry this guy could get drunk and kill himself like a Marine Reserve LTC in California and 2 other Generals who killed themselves at home and nobody had a clue why. The Marine LTC blew his brains out after going to a bar and venting to his DEA friends. The Other Generals were about to get promoted or have a new command. I suspect they were closet drunks.

I had a friend who was a lieutenant colonel and he was going to be cashiered out by an alcoholic full bird colonel was going to write him a bad Fitness report on purpose. My friend contacted his civilian deputy ambassador buddy who he once worked for and this deputy ambassador used a favor and flew in an Air Force One star generals that made this alcoholic full bird colonel rewrite his Fitness report on the spot by a direct order. This revised Fitness report changed my friend's future of this Lieutenant Colonel and he became only one of two full bird colonels to make that rank in his OCS class of 1968. What happened to the full bird colonel who trying to screw over my friend just for the hell of it caused by drinking warping his brain. This idiot full-bird became a contractor years later in Saudi Arabia but he was fired later for missing too much work because of his drunken stupor. I have big concerns over a hard-drinking Officer or Civilian.

Okay, I will be the contrarian... There used to be a SEAL Commander named Marcinko. He was brash, a lush, and ruffled a lot of feathers. He also got sh#t done, and his troops would die to accomplish the missions he laid out. I drank with him a few times at Annapolis, and one of my old girlfriend's fathers (VADM) got kidnapped in the middle of the night from how supposedly well defended quarters on a night they were warned his Red Cell was coming. Didn't matter, they were that good. Our spec operators are there to get the job done, a very dangerous one. They are not there to go to fancy dinner parties with 8 forks... Do we want warriors, or do we want good dinner party guests? My 2 cents...

LT Brad McInnis Good Points. You Did forget to Mention that Cdr Marcinko also went to the Federal Pen. I think it was for His Unique Supply Methods. Also for Pissing Off a Lot of People. LOL!

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel - I would still rather have a snake eater actually be really good at eating snakes... bring a SUPPO in to do the supply stuff.

Except we’re not talking about a command that has some etiquette challenges...SOCOM has been in the news almost exclusively for committing crime in the past year or so. Not to knock on these guys ability to do the mission, but when you have multiple SEALs facing murder charges, one of them with a US military victim, maybe this isn’t the right guy to fix things...
