Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "M42: Inside the Orion Nebula." Also known as (Messier) M42, the Orion Nebula is likely one of the most recognized sights for stargazers in the Northern Hemisphere. In this color-enhanced image, red (hydrogen) and blue (oxygen) clouds highlight wisps and sheets of dust and other gases. The Orion Nebula is 1,500 light years away and spans 40 light years across.

The combination of the Red Hydrogen & Blue Oxygen are strikingly gorgeous from a distance of 1,500 light years away and an avg. diameter of 40 light years. I have found a short video clip that covers the Orion Nebula M42 or NGC 1976 and is linked below. I will also post a separate video, which is a magnificent view from within the Nebula as seen by the Hubble and other Telescopes.

"The Orion Nebula (also known as Messier 42, M42, or NGC 1976) is a diffuse nebula situated in the Milky Way, being south of Orion's Belt in the constellation of Orion.[b] It is one of the brightest nebulae, and is visible to the naked eye in the night sky. M42 is located at a distance of 1,344 ± 20 light years and is the closest region of massive star formation to Earth. The M42 nebula is estimated to be 24 light years across. It has a mass of about 2,000 times that of the Sun. Older texts frequently refer to the Orion Nebula as the Great Nebula in Orion or the Great Orion Nebula." Wikipedia
