I watched an old John Wayne movie and they used a ‘Jeep’ ship after Pearl Harbor. I had never heard of a ‘Jeep’ ship before then.Seems the Navy is more willing to adjust their ships to meet the technology of today. Sometimes the Army and Marine Corps can be so resistant to changes it can be detrimental to their actual missionSP5 Jim Curry

the way they were portrayed in the movie was basically to support carriers by ‘restocking’ them with aircraft and ammunition SP5 Jim Curry

I think our ships should have weapons like the Trophy System to augment the Phalanx.

Yes, a Chinese silk worm or equivalent would be catastrophic to any ship.

I really don’t know much about the Phalanx System but I am all for redundancy in protecting ships. LTC (Join to see)

I read up a little on the Phalanx. 20 mm rounds at 2.2 miles per second. It is a radar guided and fires 3000 rounds per minute in 50 round bursts, however, there is a model with higher rate of fire. The Trophy is more of an area type weapon although I would assume ships would need a more robust Trophy System. MAJ Ken Landgren

Other than the fact they can't really operate by themselves, sure... An LPD may be "versatile", but it isn't a Swiss Army knife that the article claims. Amhibs rarely operate by themselves, because their self-defense capability is limited and they are too high value a target to leave undefended.
