The scary thing is many GOP supporters think they are like the soldiers who crossed the Delaware River with Washington. They believe their actions are pure. The GOP supporters will not cross the Delaware River, but they will travel into absurdity and hate.
In 1776 the revolution almost ended as Washington and his small army was trapped by the Brits on 3 sides and the water on the fourth side. He told the army to build a lot of campfires and proceeded to egress the army through a narrow path. They were halfway done escaping at sunrise. Something supernatural occurred. A dense fog with a visibility of 6 feet descended on the area which facilitated a safe escape.
Before the Continental Army crossed the Delaware River many of the enlistments were up and many went AWOL. Washington talked to the army, beseeching them to keep fighting. His army shrunk dramatically. So, many of those who stuck around wanted to fight.
On Christmas day his army marched 11 miles with cannons and horses, then they crossed the icy cold Delaware River. The weather became bitter cold, and the soldiers had to march 10 miles from the river crossing to Trenton to attack the Hessians early in the morning on December 26th. Some of the soldiers enroute died due to the cold, or left blood in the snow due to lack of footwear. Washington completely surprised the Hessians and won, a few days later he won the battle at Princeton. These victories turned the tide. Americans started to believe we could win the war and our Continental Army grew considerably.
