"A Virginia public school district has reportedly suspended a substitute teacher who made comments in support of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Washington Post reported that Arlington Public Schools (APS) sent a letter to substitute teacher John Stanton on Tuesday notifying him that he was suspended due to “an allegation of comments made to students during instructional hours regarding sensitive world events with Russia and Ukraine.”

APS wrote in its letter that Stanton can file a petition for his reinstatement within five days, but Stanton refused to do so, according to The Post.

Stanton reportedly made the remarks while he was teaching an eighth-grade Spanish class at Swanson Middle School on Friday.

“I said, ‘Here’s what’s going on,’” Stanton told The Post. “[But] the statement I think that got me was I said, ‘I personally support the logic of Putin,’ and what I meant by that is, he made a rational decision from his perception.”...

Bad explanation that came too late. If that is really what he meant, he would have said it to begin with.

In a Spanish class he choice to express his opinion about Putin and his invasion of Russia. Ummm yeah, he couldn't read the room and lucky he's only suspended not fired. Guaranteed he'd be fired had he expressed support for teaching accurate portrayal of slavery and racism as part of the US history curriculum.

SrA Ronald Moore - It isn't a violation to talk politics however, you can't take sides. The teacher must be neutral on the subject and not try to persuade students to be on their side. I simply change the subject when asked my views. The same with religion or things regarding sexual orientation. I don't get involved in those areas.

Well said Cpl Vic Burk! When I was a substitute teacher I would never have dreamed of pushing my views on my students they already had enough to worry about.

SrA Ronald Moore No, in History or Civics class it isn't but in Spanish class it's most likely violating the approved curriculum.
