APOD: 2022 October 7 - In Ganymede's Shadow

Good Red Friday afternoon, Rallypoint, and welcome to the October 7th edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "In Ganymede's Shadow." Jupiter has 80 moons. Fifty-seven moons have been given official names by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). Another 23 moons are awaiting official names.
Ganymede is the largest of the original four moons discovered by Galileo, is the largest moon in the solar system (larger than the planet Mercury), and is also the only moon known to have its own internally generated magnetic field. It interacts with the orbits of both Io and Europa (two of the other three Galilean moons). Every time Ganymede goes around Jupiter once, Europa makes two orbits and Io makes four. The three moons all keep the same face towards Jupiter as they orbit, meaning that each moon turns once on its axis for every orbit around Jupiter.
And this image of a Jovian lunar eclipse is a pretty neat shot in and of itself.

APOD Explanation: At opposition, opposite the Sun in Earth's sky, late last month Jupiter is also approaching perihelion, the closest point to the Sun in its elliptical orbit, early next year. That makes Jupiter exceptionally close to our fair planet, currently resulting in excellent views of the Solar System's ruling gas giant. On September 27, this sharp image of Jupiter was recorded with a small telescope from a backyard in Florence, Arizona. The stacked video frames reveal the massive world bounded by planet girdling winds. Dark belts and light zones span the gas giant, along with rotating oval storms and its signature Great Red Spot. Galilean moon Ganymede is below and right in the frame. The Solar System's largest moon and its shadow are in transit across the southern Jovian cloud tops.
