Three openly transgender educators in Kirkwood, Missouri, say the school district "sexualized my identity" and forced them to leave their jobs. In the backdrop are proposed Missouri policies that seek to limit how trans children and adults can exist openly in the state, including in schools.
When Hollis Moore was looking for their next teaching position four years ago, they read news articles and tried to look for signs that a school district would be supportive of their identity.
Moore is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns and the gender-neutral title “Mx.” After doing their research, they decided to accept a job in the Kirkwood School District.
“I really did think that there were a lot of good signs for Kirkwood being a good fit,” Moore said.

“We acknowledge and respect that a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression are a part of who they are,” wrote Steph Deidrick, Chief Communications Officer for the Kirkwood School District. “At the same time, gender diversity is an aspect of human sexuality. Discussion of and providing information regarding diverse gender identities is sexual education. This is consistent with the National Sex Education Standards, which name gender identity as one of the essential topics." Deidrick went on to say, “staff may use titles and pronouns without explaining sexual concepts that accompany them.”
There are rules in place. Just like the military. We have regulations in place that govern the way we act and carry ourselves. If we don't agree with the rule we work to get it changed but in the process you have to abide by those rules until they are changed. Same here. If they don't agree, then follow the rules you were hired under, then work with the state school board and the legislature to get them changed...until then follow the rules or accept the consequences and accountabilty. You can't pick and choose what rules you will abide by and which ones you think are unfair and won't. That is not how life works. I can't drive 150 MPH in a 40 MPH zone just because I have a fast car and I think that law sucks...that is a felony arrest. Actions have consequences...follow the rules or suffer the consequences.
I sm nt saying that the rules are right or they are wrong in this case but just that we have to work inside what we have until they are changed.
