I agree with the article, I am thinking of bears etc and that no pistol caliber would work. My situation is I have a bunch of them living on my property. The problem is in my state it's illegal to carry a loaded rifle in a vehicle so I am armed with a pistol. Because the state and countys have roads dividing it all. You run across a predator attacking a new born, you don't have time to load up. My pistol is a good noise maker and the villain gets it and takes off if I am in time.

CPL Douglas Chrysler - There are a lot of choices for ARs besides the usual 5.56mm. I haven't tried any of those myself but they would certainly be something to look into.

There are even AR-10 pistols that take more powerful rounds.

Stick with known builders when looking at an AR in any of the unusual calibers, then be sure to check it out thoroughly to be sure that it is 100% reliable.

Keep in mind that there are no limits on barrel length for pistols, most AR Pistols are built with somewhat short barrels (mine is a 10½" barrel in 5.56mm) but even with a 16" or longer barrel it would still be a "pistol" so long as it doesn't have a stock or a vertical front grip. The ATF let the genie out of the bottle when they approved braced pistols. They tried to undo that with last year but lost the battle in court so you can have a braced AR pistol -- talk with a competent gun shop about what's available.

I think it's interesting to note that the NRA Museum in Fairfax, Va. has a polar bear that a guy, who's name I have forgotten, killed with a .44 magnum. The bear is huge.

CPL Douglas Chrysler - Before you go hunting polar bears you need to practice, practice, practice.......................... And have a backup plan.

I've fired most the rounds You mention and for years carried a S&W, Model 15 Combat Masterpiece .38 Caliber revolver then had a S&W, Model 19, 357 Magnum. I could fire 38 round in the Magnum but the .357 round was too long to fit in the Model 15. Our Police Dept. changed to stainless steal S&W .357s the to S&W 40 calibers which sure didn't have the stopping power the Magnum did. Guess that why were were told to fire double tap, seems one round couldn't do what a single Magnum round could. Within the USAF changed from S&W, Model 15 to the Beretta, M9, Nine Mill semi auto which was pretty easy to use. On the PD it was often jackets hollow points We used which seemed to be more effective by quite a bit. I found on putting down ie deer hit by car or animals with rabies etc. the shots were fatal from l the all rounds fired but the Magnum was a lot quicker to put them out and not have them suffer even if only a few minutes. I've fired the 41 and 44 Magnums but never actually carried or used them on duty or owned one but did like them.

SGT (Join to see) - Well I don't think it's much more effective than the 40 caliber more from what I've heard. but then My experience with 10 mm is more limited. Paper target don't ell You much except I can hit what I'm shooting at. I found with a 40 caliber shot a deer hit by a car and although i knew the shot was fatal the deer was still flopping around and suffering so I used my buck knife and cut it's jugular vein and they were dead instantly. We had to account for use of each round, I only fired one but didn't mention in My report I'd used the knife. We were by the side of the road and I didn't want passing car to see the deer suffer and flop around. I NEVER had to fire more than one shot with a .357 Magnum. When guys did it seems too much fun was made of them for firing more than one round to put down a single animal.

SMSgt Lawrence McCarter - I hit a dog running accross the highway with my Suziki police bike one day.
The dog got hit by the crashbar, then slamed against the left side. I looked in the rearview mirror, and I saw the dog spinning flat on the pavement.
Stopped and checked the dog, it was dead, so I removed it off the highway, and called animal control for pickup. "10-51 at my 10-17, 10-61"
No damage to the bike, but, when I looked at my leg, there was dog shit all over my shiny motorcycle boots, and all over the left side of my uniform, and bike.
Yeah, go ahead and laugh, everyone else laughed too, I was the talking subject at the morning brefings before roll out, for two weeks.
Now I'm proud to tell the story, I can still hear the guys laughing today. "10-FU over" Lol

I have a 10mm, and I've found (mostly from other sources) that it can come in a variety of powers, from about the same as a .40 to about the same as a .41 mag. It mostly depends on who's making the cartridge.
