Interesting PO1 Tony Holland. Since India nd Pakistan have been taking turns at aligning with the USA and the west or the USSR and the east since the early 1960s, the Cold War has been brewing and peridically erupting in the Indian Ocean ever since.
Now, Iran is more active and the Somali pirates have been more brazen in the western Indian Ocean. Alignments have shifted over the decades but the USA with our increasing littoral warfare fleet as well the Russians and the Chinese will continue to be major regional players.
FYI, what do you think? COL Mikel J. Burroughs LTC Stephen C. LTC Greg Henning LTC Ivan Raiklin, Esq. Capt Seid Waddell Capt Tom Brown CW5 (Join to see) MSG Andrew White SFC Joe S. Agreed. Not sure that our shifting allegiances haven't exacerbated the problem somewhat.

China is (and for the foreseeable future, will be) flexing it's naval muscle to establish itself as more than just a regional power. They want to come out & play with the blue-water big boys. Welcome to the deep-end, here there be dragons.

We were actually testing the capabilities of the newly built comsta at Northwest Holt,
Australia at that time -- which is why we spent almost two months at Mauritius with its Royal Navy comm facility. Our ship had an extra compartment added on aft of the radio
room to accommodate the twenty or so CT's and the gear they brought aboard for our
ELINT missions.
