Both of course, but aren't we all? I can't step out in front of my bosses too many times, right? We share the responsibility to know when to be either one, or somewhere in between. I enjoy being a leader because I can positively affect missions/lives/etc., and not just because I'm in front of the formation.

We've all heard the phrase "lead, follow, or get out-of-the-way", but I'm often asked to explain what exactly does that mean? Well in an organization a leader inspires motivates, sets strategy, and in supervises outcome. A followers role however, is to be accountable for their own actions and behavior, and help others around them to do the same. So the "getting out the way" aspect means that as a leader or as a follower, if you no longer are a contributor to the positive aspects/success of the organization, then it is time for you to move on or move out. So next time you hear 'Lead, Follow or get out-of-the-way", consider your personal role to first lead one' self to the contribution of the positive efforts of those around you into the overall success of the situation you're involved in.
So to answer your question, as current and former military members we are all leaders, if we choose to be!!!

COL Mikel J. Burroughs I am both. You can't be a good leader, if you don't know how to be a good follower. Very good and useful article. Thank you.

First you learn to follow, then you learn to lead. Now you know how to motivate, inspire and serve those you lead having been a follower. You know experiencially what a follower needs and wants from a leader. Now lead them and they will follow you.
