Thanks Maj Marty Hogan for reminding us that February 27 is the anniversary of the birth of Roman Emperor of Illyrian origin from 306 to 337 AD Constantine the Great (Latin: Flavius Valerius Aurelius Constantinus Augustus) who was the son of Flavius Valerius Constantius, a Roman Army officer, and his consort Helena. His father became Caesar, the deputy emperor in the west, in 293 AD.
High birth had its privileges in Roman society as well as tremendous risk.
He was the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity. Although he lived most of his life as a pagan, he joined the Christian faith on his deathbed, being baptized by Eusebius.
Sadly as Roman Emperor he forced the Roman society to embrace Christianity. The Christian faith is an individual faith which can not be mandated.
As a state religion the Christian faith suffered and the Roman Church became a all-too-frequent cruel master. Certainly there were good clergy and pontiffs but all too often the maxim about absolute power corrupting rang true.
Rest in eternal peace Constantine the Great

It is also the 27th anniversary of the birth of my youngest son Caleb

"This video covers the life and reign of Constantine the Great, the first Christian emperor of the Roman Empire. We look at Constantine's conversion at the Battle of Milvian Bridge, his attempts to bring Christian faith to Rome, and the complex nature of Constantine's faith."
