Many people believe that the versatile Phantom F-4 was Vietnams Mig killer. It was not. When researching for an article many tears ago I was surprised to discover that it was the F-8 Crusader. The reason for this was "GUNS". The F-8 had them. The F4 only later received gun pods to deal with this dog fight .design short coming.

Very true getting rid of the machine gun what's the worst decision ever made. Yes and the Crusader was more agile to at low speeds.
