Thanks for reminding us TSgt Joe C. that on June 21, 1864 Union General Ulysses S. Grant stretched his siege lines further around Petersburg, Virginia.
Grant understood total war and recognized that the best ways to win the Civil War were to 1) starve the south - weapons, munitions, food stuffs, etc. and 2) attrite the forces of the Confederacy since the north had a much greater potential to replace soldiers who were killed, wounded or captured than the south which was depleted by this point.
FYI One of these days I plan on getting around to completing the daily civil war posts I started over a year ago.
