My first years after separating from Active Duty was a series of humiliating events. I was in my home state of Pennsylvania where my resume was read one way, but my visage was read completely different. It took leaving PA and going to the DC area when I finally got hired (after answering the question: “So what were you doing all those years after getting out of the military?” Um… I was LOOKING FOR A JOB !!!

As a former headhunter one of the toughest things vets face is transferring their skills to civilian lingo. Your case is a good example, in the DC area they understand military skills but I suspect in PA you hadn't put those skills into civilian lingo.

Actually, Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen, I was in a workshop that focused on “civilianizing” resumes.

Some good tips, thanks for, posting. On a side note to active duty folks, don't shy away from advice because it comes from AARP and you aren't close to retiring.
