Because maybe people want to own them. And, if the author thinks it's a psychological thing to make the owner feel big, then using legislation to oulaw ownership must must make him feel huge.

They don't need to be effective for game hunting or target practice, although they certainly are. We have what is known as freedom in this country. That is, you have the freedom to own things and do things in the exercise of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. You also have the freedom to not. These people whom you deride don't write articles about you and some of your habits you may not wish to publicize, nor do they murder people with their big, scary guns. So how 'bout a big, steaming hot cup of SHUT THE FUCK UP?
