Thanks for reminding us TSgt Joe C. that on March 27, 1912 Helen Taft, wife of President William Taft, and the Viscountess Chinda, wife of the Japanese ambassador, planted two Yoshina cherry trees on the northern bank of the Potomac River, near the Jefferson Memorial. This event was held in celebration of a gift, by the Japanese government, of 3,020 cherry trees to the U.S. government.
Fast forward 80 years or so and a family of beavers had decided to munch on said cherry trees. Here is an image of the damage on April 8, 1999.
There was a tug of war between beaver supporters and the National Park Service which eventually relocated the beavers far, far away.

To see the cherry blossoms in bloom is a sight to behold. I was very lucky to attend the Cherry Blossom Festival in Osaka and Atsugi, Japan.
