Thanks for giving us a heads up SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL about “Joint Operating Environment 2035” which seems so far in the future but is only a general away.
A quick scan of their "six broad geopolitical challenges the Joint Force will have to deal with 20 years from now: [my comments are in brackets]
•Violent Ideological Competition: irreconcilable ideas communicated and promoted by identity networks through violence. [ISIS has been the latest introducer of this reality.]
•Threatened US Territory and Sovereignty: encroachment, erosion, or disregard of US sovereignty and the freedom of its citizens from coercion. [illegal immigration including terrorist infiltrators has been going on since before 9-11-2001]
•Antagonistic Geopolitical Balancing: increasingly ambitious adversaries maximizing their own influence while actively limiting US influence. [Russia and China are demonstrating that in the joint naval exercise in September 2016]
•Disrupted Global Commons: denial or compulsion in spaces and places available to all but owned by none. [many nations have expanded their territorial waters and the artic and Antarctic regions have long been in play]
•A Contest for Cyberspace: a struggle to define and credibly protect sovereignty in cyberspace. [that has been going on for a couple decades]
•Shattered and Reordered Regions: states unable to cope with internal political fractures, environmental stressors, or deliberate external interference. [the Arab spring which devolved into the Arab Winter and the Middle east are current examples. The breakup of the USSR and the former Yugoslavia as well as realignment of nations has been going on for some time.]
