I don't know how to respond to this. I understand the many sides of the coin -which often happens when the Past and Present are asked to be in the same spot at the same time. I don't know a single serious Historian who thinks we would have gotten a toehold in Europe without the Eastern Front.
We lost some 400,000 soldiers in the Entire War...the Russians lost that many in single battles.
Our Civilian Casualties were zero in the USA. The UK, France, and the other "over there" Allies lost thousands, even hundreds of thousands. The Russians lost millions...again, sometimes in single battles.
Who's atrocities were worse? How can you tell when war itself is an atrocity of epic proportions. The only way to justify it - is that the alternatives are often worse...and that is hard to wrap your mind around. I would celebrate their Victory, because it ensured ours. But Propaganda Machines would love to put a spin on anyone who attends because of the current state of the world. So the Heroes and brave men and women of their History get shunted to the side, yet they paid the same price in blood that our Heroes and brave men and women did.
I hate war. It puts you in these situations where you can't even admit that bravery is bravery...and a mother losing a son, or daughter, or husbands and wives who never came back from war, or children who grew up without a parent, or parents are Universal Situations...and sadly still continue.

WW 2 is over a, World War 3 was the Cold war, Korean war and even the Vietnam war . World War 4 was the global war on terrorism and now World War 5 is the resurgence of Russia without the Warsaw pact but with China, Venezuela, Iran, Syria, Cuba and Nicaragua as allies. I'm not worried about Global climate change or climate emergency, I'm worried about a nuclear war being started by China against Taiwan, India against Pakistan or Russia getting in it with our nato allies over the Ukraine Stalin thinking Vladimir Putin stealing back the Baltic nato members. That is why we have Defender 2020 as a replacement for the old reforger exercise. I hear I get to go to defender 2021!

We could make this complicated - surely some will - because of current affairs.
Or we can just accept the idea that winning WWII is a good thing, and worthy of commemoration.
I choose the latter.
