Thanks for reminding us that Benito Mussolini was wounded by the accidental explosion of a mortar bomb on the Isonzo section of the Italian Front in World War I TSgt Joe C..
Adolph Hitler was a corporal in the German Army in WWI fighting against the allies. In WWI Italy and Japan were on the side of the allies. While Italy had been allied with Germany and Austria, in 1915 Italy sided with the allies.

It's pretty amazing how in just 20 years alliances took a 180 degree turn. I wonder why that happened?

Some allies were better than others, LTC Stephen F. ! Japan during WW1 captured the Micronesian possessions of Germany and little else (and also the Lia tong peninsula in China) while Italy kept up an entire front against the Austrians along their own northern border. Both powers felt short shafted by the Versailles Treaty for both France & Great Britain increased their empires while giving crumbs to the lesser combatants. Their antipathy must have been considerable for both changed sides for the next round of wars. They must have come to understand that the burdens of the war that they shouldered in WW1 were much reduced from the main Allies due to a much smaller economy and fighting capability; however, the supposed reason for fighting was partly to allow for self-determination to people groups was discarded through the action of slicing up the empires of the defeated powers with little thought given to setting borders along meaningful tribal or ethnic boundaries.

It is amazing how accidental events happen that transform national & local politics. I wonder sometimes what capable people were stymied in what they could accomplish due to happenstance events. Think of the incredible talents wasted to slavery and now to abortion. We also hear of innocent people kept in prison for decades for crimes someone else committed. That means some wicked murderers escaped punishment and the incarcerated one had unmet potential.
