2/34 Armor (Dreadnoughts) were the lead ground element that morning being overflown by the 1st Cav who went deep to try and trap COSVN... we fond lots of cache's rice, weapons, ammo but not the concrete COSVN HQ we were briefed on by Div G-2. A stiff ground fight as we crossed the boarder/Line of Departure that first morning. We lost a M113 cross attached from the 9th ID when it was hit with an RPG 2 on the front sloop setting off the explosives being carried to blow the mythical COSVN bunkers. No concrete bunkers were ever found... COSVN was 2 guys on a motor bike with a radio. We lost a lot of great warriors in the Cambodian Incursion. A success... yes but the cost was significant.

Thanks SP5 Mark Kuzinski for reminding us that former POTUS President Richard Nixon claimed on June 3, 1970 that the Allied drive into Cambodia is the “most successful operation of this long and difficult war,” and that he is now able to resume the withdrawal of U.S. troops from South Vietnam.
