Damn, something good coming from the Office of the President for once. However, being in Hawaii, I've already been advised not to travel for the next couple weeks.. PODUS puts a major damper on traffic and skydiving (the need to request permission to take off and land instead of just doing it -_- )

I had to chuckle when I read "The White House says that President Barack Obama will expand a national monument off the coast of Hawaii, creating the world's largest marine protected area" SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL since Midway is so far from Hawaii. [ 1,300 miles (2,100 km) northwest of Honolulu.]
I hope that a thorough search of the wrecks has been completed and that all human remains have been recovered.
I find it ironic that the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument will contain some 582,578 square miles, more than twice the size of Texas. We are currently disputing China's claim to waters to the South east in the South China Sea and yet we are claiming a huge chunk of Ocean as our own.
"The administration said Obama has protected more acreage through national monument designations than any other president." I think POTUS Obama is doing his best to make a l-gacy for himself with as little effort on his part as possible :-)

"There are several wreck sites at Midway that divers are able to visit. Some are rumored to exist but have not been located yet while others are in water too rough or shallow for safe diving. Unfortunately all the ships lost during the actual Battle of Midway rest several thousand feet deep and about 100 miles to the north."

Remnants of a 250 foot Submarine Tender in the main channel. The scenic bow lays at an angle over sand and rock in 25 feet of water. A mass of steel plates and pipes extend to the stern at 55 feet. The ship ran aground in 1944 while salvaging a submarine where the Water Barge now rests. After a large storm, the Macaw was swept into deeper water 100 meters west of the Water Barge. It too can only be visited during calm days at high tide. Titan...
