Thanks for reminding us TSgt Joe C. that the concluding act of President Richard Nixon’s historic visit to communist China, the president and Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai issued a joint statement summarizing their agreements (and disagreements) of the past week. The “Shanghai Communique” set into motion the slow process of the normalization of relations between the two former Cold War enemies.
President Richard Millhouse Nixon had the street cred as the staunch anti-communist. He was a non-nonsense POTUS. His action to reestablish relations with Communist China was an amazing act to many - especially liberals.
Later that decade on September 17, 1978, President Jimmy Carter managed to help Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin sign the camp David Accords along with himself to agree to establish diplomatic relations and sign the Camp David Accord documents.
While the 1970s were turbulent some wonderful alliances were established.

This was a unique time for diplomacy in our history. At the time China was as big as, if not a bigger boogeyman than the Soviet Union. President Nixon's trip to China was a great relieving of tensions at the time. Whether is was a good move or not was and is above my pay grade to decide.
