I had this exact conversation with an inexperienced friend at the Range last weekend. Good explanation and I totally agree.
The other thing I try to practice is cocking the hammer on a single action or double action revolver with the non firing hand. If your thumb is in the grip the Sheriff demonstrated, it's quick and easy once you start doing it and it doesn't disturb your grip on the revolver. No, John Wayne didn't go it that way, but I don't shoot one handed either if I have the choice.

CW5 Jack Cardwell I found out very early on, the hard way, about hand positioning when firing a SA pistol, Didn't leave a scar but it hurt like hell for few minutes.
