Tried and failed! A bunch of European countries, including Germany, use the freeways/Autobahn to launch and recover aircraft as a work around for a bombed out runway.
As far a rockets go, the F-104 was a rocket in it's own right. I don't know that any of it's records stand today, but it was fast in it's day. The German AF still had some in service as interceptors when I was stationed there in the 80's. Pretty impressive bird!
