I expect that you honor the dead friends, family, service members, and veterans. No doubt Memorial Day brings memories of the departed to you. Hopefully you have grieved completely and the good memories remain and the bad memories have no emotions clinging to them, by God’s grace. ‘I therefore, a prisoner of the LORD, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. I lift widows, widowers and the betrothed whose fiancée was killed in battle before they married to YOU LORD. I pray that YOU bless each individual grieving the death of their spouse or intended spouse with a peaceful and restful night. Enable them to remember the pleasant times with joy and enable them to grieve completely. 'I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. I pray that each and every adopted child of YOURS who reads or hers this prayer remembers that the empty cross at Calvary is a memorial to the atonement of all sin for each of us. As we grieve the dead, remember that God is completely just and merciful. ‘But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. And as for all who walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God.’ [Galatians 6:14-16 ESV]
LORD, YOU make it clear in YOUR Word that YOU honor Memorials including the empty cross of Christ. You directed Joshua to instruct the remnant of Israel to take unhewn stones from the Jordan River to build a memorial for the descendants of Israel forever: ‘And Joshua said to them, “Pass on before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of the Jordan, and take up each of you a stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the people of Israel, that this may be a sign among you. When your children ask in time to come, ‘What do those stones mean to you?’ then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So these stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial forever.” [Joshua 4:5-7 ESV]
