A most dangerous pastime, composing a list such as this. I can well imagine the affrontery of Brits looking for Monty's name on it. Generally, I don't have a problem with it. I might like to think that Stonewall Jackson or Robert E Lee are lurking somewhere just below position 10. And no, I'm not suggesting that their cause was great, just their leadership. Indeed, I wouldn't endorse Napoleon or Rommel for their respective causes...

Interesting-Some I'd agree with, and some I wouldn't. There's also the glaring lack of some fairly obvious candidates from more contemporary times. For the most part, "strategist", "tactician" and "lucky devil" are pretty subjective accolades. Napoleon and Rommel might have been less superior tacticians than they were brilliant at capitalizing on initiative.. Julius Caesar may have been less successful had he commanded lesser soldiers. Personally, I'd have included Wellington and even Sam Houston on this list. Also, let's not forget many battles have been fought on the sea and in the air. Certainly de Ruyter and Park deserve serious consideration...not to mention Raleigh and Halsey.
