Turkey on Thursday accused Emmanuel Macron of sponsoring terrorism in reaction to new criticism by the French president about Ankara’s operation in Syria.
Turkey last month launched an offensive against Kurdish-led forces in Syria, which Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said targeted the “terrorists” of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) militia and the Islamic State group.

Turkey is acting in it's own self-interest. They have wanted the demise of Kurdish militia factions for decades. During the Syria Civil War, they fortified their border with Syria ostensibly to keep ISIS out, but in reality pinning Kurd civilians in the conflict area and sealing off their means of escape. The Turks most likely figured that ISIS could do their dirty work for them.
Unfortunately for the Turks, the US armed and trained those Kurdish entities, leaving a more capable and veteran force than before. Turkey could not abide that, and made moves to degrade them.
Thus far, NATO has done little to repudiate these moves besides bellyache about it - as the Turks calculated they would.
