My old unit- I was back shop NDI from 1988-1999. We had A10s and B52s were added around 1995. We were dual role certified and the mission was pretty cool. We keep trying to replace these planes with faster and sleeker models and they never seems to quite push them out.

I agree about the A-10s. Not only can they provide CAS, but they can go on tactical runs for targets of opportunity, and provide valuable intelligence.

But you can't tell certain Air Force brass who want to go work for an aircraft company after they retire.

This is how I think the AF generals think:
CAS: The F-35 and A-10 can execute this, advantage A-10.
Air Superiority: Advantage F-35 but it is not a primary role.
Networking: Advantage F-35.
Budget: Advantage F-35 because the program needs more funds.

Thank you, my friend LTC (Join to see) for posting. I concur with your assessment that is probably cost effective [assuming supply and maintenance capabilities are sufficient to maintain B-52's] that extending the active life of Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II's and resurrect more Boeing B-52 Stratofortress long range bombers.
Thank you for mentioning me, my friend Maj Marty Hogan
