I was pleasantly surprised, when I went to Great Lakes for Boot Camp, at how strenuous it was. They pretty much PT'd us to death, and PI's (Personal inspections) were VERY strict, and tough in the summer. Heaven forbid if your white hat got darkened by sweat stains marching to the inspection area! The Obstacle Course was a daily, multiple time event as well and locker inspections - all OPEN faced lockers except for a drawer you had to padlock were rough. Every article of clothing had to be folded, "JUST SO!" The first part was fairly easy, inspection/uniform wise as we wore dungarees; but the second part was Dress White; sometimes Undress Whites. I was lucky ... got out with a 4.0 and never did get a gig. Shaving was brutal - they'd take your ID out of your top shirt/blouse pocket and slid the edge up your cheek - DOOM on those whose cards med stubble! LOL We also did a 16 count Manual of Arms, and a 96 count Manual of Arms. Fire Watch Duty was tough too ... the OD would come by and you had better know the General Orders!
I loved Boot Camp though - as an HA I was a Squad Leader. Our Company Commander was a Torpedoman 1st Class named Burke. We had an Airdale as his assistant and he was sharp and brutal.
