LTC (Join to see) - It's progress, but progress needs to go faster. Air cooled VWs from the 1970's got nearly 28 MPG. Of course they are not nearly as fast. ;) We are making progress the problem is while individual cars are more efficient and pollute less the amount of use has been increasing.

Here is some information from the EPA on CO2 emissions in the US since 1990. We are maintaining our current levels of emissions despite our increased efficency which isn't good when the velocity is in the wrong direction.

The insidiousness of this problem is we can't get everyone to agree there is a problem so more and more damage is done. I'd argue something like Iran is in some ways much easier to deal with because it is easier to get consensus that something should be done in the first place. Meanwhile, tick, tick, tick.

Drought which leads to food and water shortages, has been driving rapid urbanization in the middle east and elsewhere around the world and IMO it's one of the primary drivers behind the conflict in Syria and the growth in "End Times" sects within Islam.
