I enlisted, after the 1982 Sabra and Shatilla massacre in a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon by Israel (with the cooperation of a faction of the Lebanese government which participated in it). UNFIL folks were killed too.
It was a devastating betrayal to refugees and UN. I figured our nation might do what was right . . .
I wanted to be part of the peacekeeping force in the Sinai when I enlisted.
When a peace keeping force was sent to Lebanon, they were attacked by the same violators. Still waiting for the effective appropriate response which prevents those types of violations.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel Thanks for posting Forgot to mention the article was a good history.
I didn't didn't find anything about the Marine Barracks attack . . . and knew nothing about it until much later. Not even sure about the dates. (Using a tablet again after another "attack" on my computer. It's like a toy with limited access compared to a computer system so it is a time and labor intensive effort to find anything online without a struggle. Phone and tablet apps are a joke given they are never fully functional<sigh>)

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel I'm gonna disagree with you about that. We can always claim High Ground when we reach it regardless of past words and actions and why.
Don't sell yourself short. The shadow self never lies - however it is possible to make peace with what is in its past when you have done your job as it was intended to be done - despite the opinions of other people.
We all have a bone or two or three or more to pick with the so called "wisdom" of our government's military decisions and the resultant orders that too often roll down hill exactly like sh_t.
