"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
Written at a time when a comma was a decidedly direct way to focus a person's attention and understanding. This was particularly important when the reader of the sentence might be miles or oceans away - perhaps even hundreds of years in the future. The writers of the Constitution had their thoughts molded by words written over the span of thousands of prior years.
In that clause are the contained thoughts of the Constitution's signatories about, among two others, of the 'duty' by citizens to be armed - that the government was PROHIBITED from restricting.
Those commas are used to set off the parenthetical element (at the end of the sentence) from the entailed duties of the sentence. Commas provide for the reader's understanding of the parenthetical statement. This is done by using all prior 'comments' to equally support the statement of a specific 'something'. All commas in a sentence in this instance are used to lead the reader to the final expression through the prior commonly-held duties.
Not having one of the three commas would be like having a stool with a broken leg. Unstable. It is the three commas that support the final statement of "shall not be infringed" - which applies to all its commented parts, separated by the commas, within the 2nd Amendment.
The people have the duties to maintain militias, the security of freedom, to keep and bear arms.
