Almost 2,000 soldiers from four units in three states will deploy later this year, the Army announced, with nearly half heading to the Middle East to take part in the fight against the Islamic State.
The moves, made public in two Friday news releases:
•About 450 soldiers with the Fort Bragg, North Carolina-based XVIII Airborne Corps headquarters will replace III Corps in Kuwait this summer as HQ of Operation Inherent Resolve, the international effort combating IS.
•About 400 members of 1st Battalion, 10th Aviation Regiment, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, out of Fort Drum, New York, are also heading to the region. They will leave in April as part of a rotation of forces to Iraq and Kuwait.
•Roughly 700 soldiers with 1st Armored Division Combat Aviation Brigade out of Fort Bliss, Texas, will head to Europe in May as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve. The "Iron Eagles" will take part in multinational training among other duties, the release states.
•About 400 soldiers with 1st Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, also from Fort Bragg, will make a rotational deployment to South Korea this summer. The unit is the Army’s only remaining Kiowa Warrior helicopter squadron.
More than 100 paratroopers with 82nd Airborne's Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion returned home to Bragg last week after a nine-month deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. On Monday, the Army announced 4,000 soldiers with the Bliss-based 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st AD, will deploy to Kuwait this spring.
