Smyth Busters: Is Match Ammo Better Than Standard Ammo?

I found this to be very true especially with .22LR. When I was shooting bullseye competition I had two .22 pistols I shot. One a S&W Model 41 , the other. Ruger Target Government Model. They shot the same but the S&W loved the expensive Eley Pistol Match ammo and the Ruger loved the GI ammo in white box with black lettering. In the .45 matches the Match ammo could make the difference if shooter did is part.

I asked the CEO of Alliant Technologies who owns Federal Ammunition.
The main difference between production ammo and Match Ammo, which justifies the higher cost of the Match ammo is that production ammunition is produced to a looser tolerance. That is, Match Ammunition is produced where the weight of the cartridge and the overall length is more closely monitored as is the weight of propellant and the concentricity of the seating of the projectile.
I asked because my cartridge of choice is the 175gr Federal Gold Medal Match Sierra Match King .308 OTM. That round is expensive when compared with production M80 ball.
Is it more expensive? Yes...Is it worth It? Well only you can decide that. How important is accuracy to you?
It is a simple equation. With the cost of each round, and the amount that you shoot, how many "9s" are you willing to shoot when you can get an "X" with the better round.

Indeed, a lot depends on your goals. In precision shooting many matches are won by the X count.

Precision shooting is not a sport to be taken on the cheap...
UNLESS you Reload and reload to an Anal retentive attention to detail point. I load for myself and will not settle for less than exact. Single stage press, same lot on projectile, powder and primer, weighed and reweighed. If I have to change lots, it goes into a different box. But I like hitting at 1000 yards. So it is the difference between making a hit on a 9 inch target and a silver dollar at a grand. I would rather take two hours to shoot 20 rounds and hit exactly where I want to than get a hundred hits on target someplace on the paper.
As I get older, rapid fire is less important than that one perfect shot.

Reload your own. You can increase your accuracy 3-5% when done correctly... even over match ammo.... I prefer boat tail when long distancing is required. You can trim brass to an exacting measurement, you can seat the round to either touch the rifling, or back out slightly from it, adjusting to your individual weapon system. You can swap magnum primers for a standard primer for more pressure enhancing ignition. But alas... if no primers are available... you ain't gonna shoot shit, factory loads or your own. Just sayin'...
