Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Jupiter's Magnetic Field from Juno." The Juno spacecraft is currently in orbit around the planet Jupiter, and is scheduled to remain there until July 2021. One of the topics of investigation for Juno is the magnetosphere of Jupiter. Deep in the planet's atmosphere, under great pressure, hydrogen gas is squeezed into a fluid known as metallic hydrogen. At these great depths, the hydrogen acts like an electrically conducting metal which is believed to be the source of Jupiter's intense magnetic field. As the video clip ( 0:45), there are actually three magnetic poles on Jupiter (there are only two on Earth). Our Earth has its own anomalies, such as the difference between the geographic and magnetic poles. The more we learn, the more we realize we do not know. Funny how that works.

Good morning Maj William W. 'Bill' Price and thank you for this outstanding APOD which pictorially describes Jupiter's Magnetic Field and toward that end, I am including an adjunct video which continues the description in a slightly different manner... I believe that this video will add to your excellent APOD... https://youtu.be/aSHfN7lCK70

Sgt (Join to see) - VERY interesting! Has anyone ever suggested that all this may be some kind of "protection" to the planet - created by someone/thing as camouflage? OK - I've had no sleep, LOL - but still ............

I wonder what the impact of having a magnetic field like Jupiter's instead of ours would be on life...?
Certainly using a compass for direction won't cut it!
