Is there a risk that close associates can be compromised and used to repeat information discussed, with them away from the work environment?

Absolutely/ It is also likely that will make it back to work as well. My motto, as given to me by my Mother: If you have nothing good to say, say nothing at all

SP5 Dennis Loberger can you imagine how many bridge parties have conversations about the husband's work?

Work should be left at work when you go home. I never discussted anything with my wife orsignificant other as had their own problems. and when I left work worked stayed at the door till I got back. It wasn't that I had anything to hide but most of my work had private information.

SSgt Robert Simonds whenever my son seems irritated and I ask him about work, he bellows that he does not want to talk about work. He says he will deal with work when he returns.

All my work in the military was pretty much classified so the urge to discuss any of it at home, even the unclassified part, was pretty much not there. If you happened to be home when a wives club function was going on there, you'd have no doubt that there was a definite possibility that anything mentioned to a spouse about associates was going to be repeated. So yes there is that danger.
