I vote the question if it is valid for thought provoking discussion whether I agree or not with the ...if I feel it is with the intent of solid civil and professional debate.

I vote a comment for the same reasons.

If there is an article attached I read the article and compare it to the question or comment then vote if the two are correlated for good debate and then I usually comment.

I downvoted someone one time in the very beginning without knowing what it really meant. I apologized and went back and tried to fix it. I down voted someone one time with malice and left comments as to why. They were stirring the pot and baiting folks and then making it personal without keeping it civil. It has to be unprofessional comments for me to downvote. Most of the time I just move on. That is how I see it.

I vote the question, link or comment initially when it first appears. After that follow on comments if they make sense to me.

I'll vote the question if I believe the question to be valid, reasonable and in promoting a good discussion.
I'll vote a comment based on the reasoning, and of course, if it fits within my world view.
I always follow up a down vote with remarks. Of course, most who say something that generates a down vote from me are as interested in my opinion as I am in theirs.

I vote on both items. I've down voted by mistake twice, but changed the vote quickly.

Do you vote the question or the comment on RallyPoint? Do you know the protocol?

I vote the question if it is thought provoking versus trolling. Then I look at the comments and if I agree with them I will vote them up. If I don't agree then I don't vote up or down. If they are absolutely off the chain slapping people in the face or just plain trolling, I will sometimes vote down. However, I have rarely voted something down....I just let it go and move on. If I do down vote there will be comments...whomever deserves to know why I threw a downvote.

You have the option to do both. If you feel the question is really good or thought provoking you can vote it up. If you read a response to the question you like or agree with you can vote it up as well. Questions and responses votes are tallied in different category and voting on one doesn't require you to vote on the other. You can also down vote something based on how you feel about it.

I try to do both, SGM (Join to see). If I really agree with the question/answer, I try and give my feedback and explain the best I can.

SSG Houde, thanks for being the first to respond. More people need to vote on the actual question!

I usually do not "thumbs up" the question right away.  After seeing the conversation it generates, I'll go back and give it an "up" or not. Thumbs up on a comment comes from 2 points of view. 1-if I am in full agreement and 2 - I may not be in agreement, however, is well thought out, explains the point of view.  I do not have to agree with the result, however, many times the effort put into the tought is worthy of an "UP".

I generally do not give thumbs "down", and state disagreement in my comments.  Though sometimes, some comments (rarely) will get the down vote when they slander, ridicule, disrespectful or just flat out stupid! I still have a fingers left over on one hand from giving "thumbs down".  I've received 3-4 during my tenure on RP, and on 3 of them, just the down vote and no comment!  I laugh them off and move on to the next topic.

I will always leave a comment if/when I render a thumbs down.

I vote both, when I vote down I definitely state why. I think that if someone voted down without a comment I would find the person and ask why they voted down.

I vote on the question or comment. I will also make comment if I feel my words contribute to the discussion and has not be completely duplicated by someone else's words. I am interested in all of the discussions, although I may not be able to post my opinions because my workplace blocks sites like RallyPoint and I have to wait until the end of the day to make my comment or provide an answer.

I upvote the question and comments I like and I’ve probably upvoted most people I discuss things with here at one time or another. There is almost always something that someone says we like, no matter how much we may disagree on other issues.

Generally the only downvotes I give are when I’m downvoted first. Discussing things with people we don’t agree with is a good thing. I’m sorry but downvoting a view we may not agree with seems a bit ... insecure, childish, etc, so I downvote people who downvote simply because we disagree.

Well if the original post is an actual question then my vote is towards the question followed by feedback. Any down vote definitely gets an explanation. Many original posts are just a statement of opinion; no question even asked. I do enjoy how some of those do lead to commenters asking questions of the original poster.
