So I saw my first military poser today at Wal-Mart of all places. Had Army ACUs, popped collar, what looked like a white turtleneck and Doc Marten's boots, patrol cap on indoors, no name tapes anywhere, Marine Corps Globe-and-Anchor on his pc, no unit patches and an American flag patch with no stars. I asked him what unit he was in, he responded with being an E-7 petty officer in the Navy.

Annnnnd, go...

A Navy E-7 would have NEVER identified him or herself as an "E-7 Navy petty officer"...

They would have told you they are a "chief" or "chief petty officer".

Wearing things to honor the military is okay. He blew it with the claim of service. I have a grandson who won't be able to serve because of special needs, but he loves the military (USMC #1) and loves to wear military paraphernalia. Honoring and posing two different things. When I take him to the VA with me he loves to stand in the waiting room and salute all the Vets.

hmmmm. I thank god everyday that I do not run into assholes like this. I do not know if I could maintain my bearing. I have been retired for almost 5 yrs and have trouble everyday just dealing with civilians. Truly gets me pissed when I see these posts.......

I worked personnel in the Army back when they still had a personnel batallion. We had a guy PCS to our unit fresh out of basic and AIT. He had both airborne and ranger on his uniform. He had only been in the Army about 6 months. He had added the documentation to his record. He actually thought he could get away with this when he worked in enlisted records section. It did not end well for him.

Funny enough, you reminded me of a guy we called Smitty. Monterey, CA in '91. He walks into the unit with E2 on his sleeves but rows of service stripes, combat stripes, combat patch, EIB, and a full rack of ribbons and specialty badges, some even Navy and Air Force. Turns out his records were legit. He was a Vietnam Infantry vet that transferred to the Air Force, then tried the Navy, but was unhappy with both and got out for a few years. Someone talked him into reentering the Army to get his retirement. He lost his rank due to a long gap in service and had to put E2 back on to enter. He had his NCO status back in a very short time though. He was an anomaly. He had documentation for his service history and was a very mellow, non braggart type. He would tell some of his history, yet was very matter of fact about it rather than "story telling."

Hopefully he got spanked over it. In the 80s there were guys who would go and get copies of orders, and white out someone's name, and types there's in. Shitbags.. I always hoped they would get sent to an Airborne unit

Hard to believe that anyone would try that while still in the service.Maybe some actually get away with it.
The E-2 in SGT Griffins story probably didn't want to put up with a lot of crap from others in the service so he wore his decorations. No doubt he got tired of explaining it all but if he got his rate back fast maybe the decorations helped. The guy had a situation there and he took full advantage of it. Good for him. I think I would have done the same. You earn it you have the right to wear it regardless of your present rank.

I saw one while getting gas near a military base in PA. I started questioning him. He was a bit off, so instead i just berated him for his sloppy uniform, his uncut hair and his demeanor. I started to dress him down and made him so uncomfortable he admitted he bought the uniform at an Army Navy surplus store. Then claimed he tried to enlist but had too many Federal Convictions.. WOW

I think it would be hilarious to see a uniformed SGM give this kind of ass-chewing, and then the idiot poser would call him/her "sir or ma'am." The reaction of the SGM to that...I'd pay money to see.

I'm assuming the term PC in your description is patrol cap..... Not trying to play devils advocate here...but sometimes the fouled anchors for a Navy Chief Petty Officer (E-7) can be mistaken for a MC G&A. Odd that is was Army ACU's - being that the Navy's version are baby blue. Forgive this old salt, not familiar with the term "popped collar". Not unusual for no Unit patches on Navy digitals either. American Flag....meh...don't sound right. Turtle neck? Please tell me it was 40 below zero where you were. Name tapes - not good. Would have been good to see a pic - even from the rear.

I have seen some Navy reservists with some hosed up, from the floor up uniforms - Doc Marten's being a fave of reservist that I've seen.

All considered - it could have been a reservist - who knew he was about to be part of RP's next brutalization..........

SPC Daniel Edwards - navy corpsman serve with the marines, and if they qualify as FMF, they also wear the class A's of a marine, and the PC is the same as a marine still have mine 85-87, although I wasn't there and you have no pics let it go, pick your battles this one is done

I've never seen a Navy reservist in Doc Martens. I'm pretty sure any CPO would be having a 'counseling session' with the Sailor in question.
