Ah yes, we've all seen them; "so, there you were" in a theater or a room full of service members or veterans, one minute everything's ok, then all of a sudden there it is... the over-the-top military movie discrepancy! So, what was that moment that stands out most in your mind? What are those associated memories or stories that come to mind? Did the base theater erupt into 'chaos' over an unkempt/incorrect uniform, improper language/jargon/ customs, or was there something that was just plain 'unsat' from a military point-of-view. lol Well, there's a ton of them out there, and I'm pretty sure that something should immediately come to mind, so what are we waiting for? Quick, pull up a keyboard, and let's get this thing started; thanks for all that you do, and... see you all in the discussion threads!

"Where Eagles Dare" (1968) - At the beginning of the movie (winter '43-'44), a German officer lands in an American Bell 47 helicopter that didn't enter service (in the U.S.) until 1946.
All the females were coiffed in obvious sixties hairstyles. No attempt at all to take the hair back to the forties! Many other WWII movies of the sixties did the same with women's hairstyles.

LTC Stephen C.
MSG Sean Hayes, and where would they find such a DZ in the middle of that mountainous region for that matter?! Also, WWII German parachutes attached to the jumper differently than current practice. German parachutes had a single point attachment between the shoulders, and they exited head first.

MSG Sean Hayes, I knew that Alistair MacLean wrote it, but I did not know the back story. Thanks! Kelly's Heros was hilarious and one of my all time favorites. To me, Carroll O'Connor as the general completely stole the show!

MAJ Terry LaFrance
LTC Stephen C. - Some of the great quotes of that movie are Carroll O'Connors- "NOT NOW BONZER WE GOT THE GAME ON!"; "I GOT A MEDAL HERE IN THE JEEP FOR YA!"; "I'M COMIN' DOWN THERE BOOKER!". Pretty much yelled most of his dialog. :-D

I hated "The Messenger". The characters did not wear their uniforms correctly (particularly the berets looked awful) and they blatantly failed to follow Casualty Notification procedures. It's a serious topic and I felt they made a mockery out of it. Maybe I was only overreacting? Hmm.
Two that come to mind, M60 tanks in Patton, and Rambo fires a Law inside a Huey

As soon as Hollywood and/or television writers get involved, discrepancies are a given. They either jazz-up capabilities to almost "god-like" infallibility or they have people doing things well outside their functional capabilities. I really like the NCIS show but I alternately laugh and groan through most shows. However, such shows are for mental "escapism" entertainment only and can't really be taken too seriously.
Like everyone else, NCIS agents are human beings with all the usual human failings. I even tossed (figuratively, not literally) one out of my office once when he came to me with a totally unsubstantiated allegation about one of my CPO's based on a "druggie" trying to cut a deal. I and the Command Master Chief did some unobtrusive investigation but found there was absolutely no substance behind the story. However, I was ultimately happy to find I didn't have a bad CPO so it wasn't really a waste of time.

The thing that really bugs me about NCIS is when did they start calling the NIS the NCIS?
When I was in, it was the NIS, they didn't wear uniforms, and no one could stand those guys, because they were always trying to bust perfectly innocent people.

"The Last Ship" you know the new TV series. The engine room on this Arleigh Burke type Guided Missile Destroyer has an engine room fire and we see flash bang - an oil fire in the boiler room or an old style ship, not a gas turbine ship. Glaring only to one who served or trained on a Gas Turbine, but still...

This was not a movie but a TV Show, I was watching NCIS and it was an episode where a recruiter was at the school career day handing out Brochures. He was a Navy Recruiter and the Brochures he was handing out were for the Marine Corps. I rewound and looked twice to make sure an it was so!!

Battlefield Earth another John Travolta "Classic", the scene where they find one Harrier Sim and the Humans basically become fully CMR with like 5 sim hours, oh and the fact that they can launch all those Harriers without fuel, maintainers, airfield ops, ATC, weapon loaders, actively built missiles and munitions, someone who knows how to configure a Harrier, and in post apocalyptic Earth GPS, TACAN, and UHF/VHF radio stations are all still powered and functioning because reasons!

There was a movie, can't swear to it but I think it was Iron eagle, but it showed many scenes of it taxing, taking off, flying, into a dogfight, then landing. The jet changed types 5 times. Now if you can change and F5 into an F4 and others in flight, thats great.
