No way should the 5 pillars of Islam be mandated in Middle School as a religious experience. They should be taught with the tenets of Christianity, Judaism and the other major regigions in World history. No way should children be instructed to say or write "Allah is the only God" or that Mohamed is is his prohet.

SFC James Sczymanski -
Physical education is taught in every grade where I live. History is important to learn in school because the culture will do its best to dumb children down. A basic understanding of world history and what shapes current events is useful for children to learn = the world they will be experiencing will probably be much more violent and ruthless than the one grew up in.
To be honest I am pretty sure schools outside the military refer to it as Physical Education because to the PT stands for Physical Therapy :-)
Only the military uses PT for physical training but I expect the prisons use the same term :-)

SFC James Sczymanski - I realize phys ed is not treated the same in each area. I am glad it is respected here and expect that in conservative areas it is generally more widespread. In liberal areas other social education classes seem to be taking hold such as the 5 Pillars of Islam.

LTC Stephen F. - Colonel; IF "religion" is going to be taught in (public) schools then, in my opinion, it can/should only be taught on the basis of "The __[fill in the blank]__ religion says that __[fill in the blank]__.".

Any teaching of "The __[fill in the blank]__ religion says that __[fill in the blank]__ and that is the one and only true religion." should not be allowed.

Not only that, but the people who are going to be teaching the religions MUST have more knowledge of them than "Muslims worship Allah and that means that the don't pray to God." or "The Jews killed Jesus and that's why they are evil.". or "The Pilgrims came to America so that they could set up a country where everyone was free to worship in their own religion." (all three of which statements are patently false [but believed by a significant number of people]).

“I honestly don’t want my child learning about Islam at all, but if they’ve got to learn about it, I would like for them to learn about the historical aspects of it and definitely nothing about the religion.” I'd hope the person making that comment realizes they go hand in hand as with any religion. Or would teaching how folks were forced to convert to Christianity or killed would be more appropriate to that commentator? History is a nasty subject, yet the more you know about it, the more informed you are in it. You can't pick and choose what's "cool" to learn about in regards to history. Now writing "Allah is whatever" is pushing it even for me and I consider myself to be a rather open minded person. Good choices with the survey questions BTW. I'm SURE Fox will be all over this with Todd Starnes leading the charge.

Ideally religion shouldn't be taught in schools at all; but if it must then they should all be taught as part of overall world cultures, since religions have had a hand in shaping societies through history.

SSG (Join to see) - Staff; If one doesn't "teach religion" in schools, then how does one teach about things like "The Hundred Years War", "The Crusades", "Pogroms", and/or "The Protestant Reformation"?

Does one simply say "There were these two groups. One was called "Christians" and the other was called "Muslims" and they had different ideas about how things should be run so they decided to kill each other."?

COL Ted Mc - Okay, good point-- obviously, "teach religion" as in, have the schools be a stand-in for church/mosque/bet'knesset, etc.

Folks can get their weekend fix... on their weekend, if they wish.

SSG (Join to see) - Staff; "The weekends" would be when the little children are told that whatever their religious leaders say is true and the only real true actual interpretation of the literal 'Word of God' while the rest of the week would be when they are told what their religious leaders (and the other guys religious leaders) say the 'Word of God' is WITHOUT being told that any of the versions that they are being exposed to are "**T**R**U**E**"..

Should the Five Pillars and the rest of this be mandated?

It's a school. The kids are there to get an academic education. Religious education should be provided by a religious institution of the parents' choosing. There's no room in academics for religion, especially in a horribly decentralized school system that's not even one of the top school systems in the world. This is a shameful distraction for a first world country.

I live in the middle of this local firestorm. I do not think the teaching of religion of any kind needs to take place in our schools. There is insufficient time to teach the students the old 3Rs that served us so well for years and we use the time for a topic that is relevant in another venue. One of my grandsons is in the middle of this subject at this time. My issue, other than what I noted, is that there is an inordinate amount of time devoted to Islam as compared to the other religions.

The Daily Caller isn't exactly the font of unbiased reporting. I wonder how much of this is willful misrepresentation and how much of it is overly sensitive parents that view their children not being crammed into a padded ideological box with great horror.

Cpl James Waycasie - It is a sad situation, but I think that our current school system is more about herding cattle through than it is about actually teaching. It is all about the numbers. Everything else is secondary.

A week before my daughter entered middle school, there was a Parent's day so parents could look around, meet the teachers, visit class rooms and get a general idea of what classes would be taught. As we were walking down a hallway, I noticed one room had a sign that said evolution. The teacher was standing by the door. I made the remark to my daughter that she would not be attending that class. The teacher spoke up and said yes she will. Evolution is a mandatory class. I replied we'll see about that. I went to the main office and informed the Principle that my daughter would not be attending the evolution class. He said I'm sorry Sir, but it is mandatory. I explained our belief in God and his creation and informed him not only would I be calling the Walker County school board, I would also be contacting my Attorney to file a law suit against the middle school for trying to force a class on my daughter that went against our religious beliefs. Took him about ten minutes to produce a paper for me to sign stating that due to our religious beliefs, my daughter would voluntarily not be attending said class. People get pushed around mostly because they will not stand up to something that is obviously wrong in their book.

Cheerleaders in Tenn state have also been advised to stop saying pregame prayers or face consequences after religious groups made formal complaints.... Is this what all of you who stand behind obama really want for this country???

What the Hell is wrong with people ??? 1st we are told we can't have open prayer before we go outside the wire, then Chaplains are tossed out of the Military, Pledge of Allegiance  is done away with, but its ok for muslims to wear headdresses, grow beards in the military, still do prayer in the military and can enter this country and military even though they are illegal??? Where does this bullshit end???
