The answer may surprise you:

"Because of the service of midshipmen in every major conflict the country has been involved in since World War II, the regiment is privileged to carry a regimental battle standard. The Merchant Marine Academy is the only Federal Service Academy granted the right to do so, and the standard is carried with the colors at all times. Campaign ribbons from all the conflicts midshipmen have taken part in help to dress the battle standard, and bring honor to the academy and her midshipmen."

The Merchant Marine Academy is the only Federal Service Academy that is not a Military Service Academy and yet its graduates have supported every war since it was founded in 1943 during WWII when so many merchant seamen and ships were sunk by U-boats primarily SN Greg Wright.
[Update] Some remember how the Merchant Marine brought back oil burners to support Operation Desert Storm. Not only the vessels but those who crewed them were brought back from retirement including Merchant Marine Academy graduates.
It is very fitting that the Merchant Marine Academy is authorized to carry a regimental battle standard.

SN Greg Wright - I recognize that my friend. I was trying to highlight the service that the merchant marine has provided in WWII primarily. Some remember how the Merchant Marine brought back oil burners to support Operation Desert Storm. Not only the vessels but those who crewed them were brought back from retirement including Merchant Marine Academy graduates.
I modified my response accordingly.

The graduates of the Academy can go into any branch of the military and also sail for a private company so their opportunities are endless.

Couldn't find a bigger one. The '142' is the number of cadet-midshipmen lost during WW2.
