As soon as you take something out of your arsenal, it becomes a weakness that your enemy will exploit.

SGT Robert Pryor I agree, I also see this conversation as part of bigger one. This same question can be applied to many other assets such as carriers and tanks. Especially because right now the Marine Corp is retiring all their M1 Abrams tanks. It really has me thinking has some of these assets outlived usefulness because when I think about tanks they haven't been used that often in the role they were designed for and are at most times ill suited for most of combat today. Im not saying tanks are obsolete but i do suspect that the tanks in their current form might obsolete and might need to come out with more flexible design of tank that can go from open field fighting to urban warfare. Its just one the things is seem to notice is that for all these major war assets their fundamental missions and roles have either clone away or rmsignifcantly changed where i dont think these assets in their current form are practical to the fighting to come.

The issue at hand here is actually what is a "strategic bomber" PFC (Join to see)? The role of the traditional "strategic bomber" changed dramatically as a result of the first Gulf War. Traditional roles for these assets were thrown out the window as B52's, B1's and B2's were pressed into "Tactical" roles. The lines were blurred so deeply that the "strategic" roles are a very small part of what these assets do today. Add to the equation the advent of super smart bombs with incredible small Circular Error Probability and you can use on B52 to address myriad tactical targets and provide relief to very important air superiority fighters. Thanx for the post and the opportunity for an old Targeteer to pontificate. I hope my response is informative.

MSgt Stephen Council Appreciate the insight because honestly I just see this as part of bigger discussion. Same principle could be said for carriers are they passing there usability and practicality in wars of the future. Huge concern is the fundamental mission strategic bombers and carriers were designed and made for seem to be non existent or have changed. So alot of interesting dilemmas in regards to these assets.

PFC (Join to see) - That professional curiosity and next level thinking will serve you well as you progress in your career. Please feel free to reach out to me for mentoring. I wont list my qualifications, suffice to say that mentoring and professional development were such a hallmark of my active duty career that my flight (largest intelligence flight in the AF when I retired) presented me with a Springfield Armories Stainless 1911 as a retirement gift!
