SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL Okay libertarian Cato Institute Director of Health Policy Studies Michael Cannon is proposing "Make troops and veterans pay for their own medical insurance."
"In an online essay last week, institute Director of Health Policy Studies Michael Cannon recommends dropping the idea of free health care for veterans and instead offering better pay for current troops and vouchers for current veterans to buy their own coverage on the open market.
“Privatization would improve the quality of veterans’ benefits immeasurably,” he wrote. “The federal government promises veterans’ benefits to military personnel once they leave active duty. Only it’s not an explicit promise. And Congress doesn’t fund it.
“As a result, Congress can -- and does -- renege on that commitment.”
Those of us who served this nation in the military services of the USA have a reasonable expectation to be cared for while we are in the service and afterwards as disabled veterans or military retirees. Since the vast majority of service members do not stay in until retirement, most veterans with service-connected disabilities.
Workers' compensation insurance is required by law for employees of companies. If companies are required to cover work-related injuries and accidents; how much more should the Federal government cover the requirements for military service members injured on duty - as all know - when on active duty, we are on duty 24/7.
Michael Cannon should try this logic on Medicare patients which is the lions share of the population. If the government funded and offered vouchers for all Medicare eligible patients, the costs would be much easier to calculate. These patients generally use civilian medical and hospital care already.
Next step would be for Congress to actually fund Social Security instead of using Social Security [FICA] taxes to fund and pay for current receipts.

I have not been to a VA facility though I have friends who do. I buy my own health insurance on the open market because I know the VA is strapped and don't want to take up space and time when I can afford to do this on my own

The worst thing for the VA would be privatization. One of my fears is that the Trump administration will start a voucher system. This would be a problem. There should not be a profit motivation from the private sector. The military branches are not a for profit industry. It should be remembered that military service is a government service paid through taxation, and it is our responsibility as taxpayers to care for those who have sacrificed for our great nation.

That is just stupid, absolutely no thought was put into that idea. Sounds like something you text at 3am after a drunken party.
