I wasn't there but I heard about this story second hand. It's difficult to tell facts from two different points of view. SOF back then would operate in a combatant commanders battle space and they wouldn't even know it. Communication was terrible to say the least. I'm sure that if he were still alive, we could find someone to say something bad about Chest Puller too.

SFC (Join to see) - I just finished reading about Land Vei. The Marines did not send in reinforcements, but on the second day Gen. Westmoreland did send reinforcements and air attacks from the Air Force and Helicopter companies. I was disappointed to read they SF camp had to endure a night of carnage many deaths. Westmoreland:
"With first light filtering through windows back in MACV-Headquarters, Saigon, General William Westmoreland, overall commander of US forces in Vietnam was aghast that since learning of Lang Vei’s situation no helicopters had left their pads with a relief force. He personally ordered Khe Sanh to immediately provide units and attempts to rescue those trapped at the base began accelerating along with more coordinated airstrikes to sweep the enemy away. But not before the NVA made one final effort to dislodge Willoughby’s men and this time, almost find success."
You can read this second part which occurred on the second day of fighting.

MAJ Charles Blake - Sad to read about both of these. The difference between the two battles is that there wasn't any poor communication, the Marine commander simply refused. As soon as Westmoreland got word he sent in reinforcements. I read the story of Mattis refusing to help the Special Forces. Here's a link to that:

http://www.aol.com/article/news/2016/12/02/former-special-forces-officer-gen-mad-dog-mattis-left-my-me/21619467/

A former Army Special Forces officer is accusing retired Marine General James Mattis, President-elect Donald Trump's pick to be defense secretary, of "leaving my men to die" after they were hit by friendly fire in Afghanistan in 2001.

Mattis has not commented publicly on the incident, which was chronicled in a 2011 New York Times bestselling book, "The Only Thing Worthy Dying For," by Eric Blehm. The book portrays Mattis as stubbornly unwilling to help the Green Berets.

His actions, which were not formally investigated at the time, are now likely to get far more scrutiny during the retired general's Senate confirmation process.

SGT (Join to see) - this situation is still used as a lessons learned for communication issues. From what I know, this was a communication issue but I could be wrong. SSG(P) Chris Erickson, MSG Dan Castaneda what's your take?

MAJ Charles Blake - I don't know. It could have been in Iraq, but not at Lang Vei. That commander flat out said no, because he didn't want any of his men involved. Two attempts were made on the radio asking for support, and both times they were told no. So there wasn't any miscommunications at Lang Vei.

This is an over the top title from military times with scant information SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL. We have been seeing attacks in the news media on most if not all of President-elect Donald Trump's nominations for secretarial appointments. I think this is a low blow especially when
when we consider the Benghazi attack and the lack of response to protect a US Ambassador.

Mattis was only upholding the finest of Marine traditions that date back to their support of a Special Forces Team in need at Lang Vei.
