May I have more Littoral Combat Ships, Mother? A consortium of senators have called on the Secretary of Defense to fund 3 more of the ships in next years defense budget.

I'd like to think that this call to purchase more littoral combat ships was based on defense needs, but it is more than coincidental that the three senators most likely have other interests. The article mentions that the shipyards where they're built are in two of the states represented by the senators involved and I bet the third from Florida has some other interest as well.
I think that a wider discussion is needed. Keeping in mind that America is the prime market for all of the world's trade goods, why aren't they shipped here in US flagged ships? Ships built here. A civilian ship building industry could then be on standby to shift to military needs in wartime (remember WWII?).

Yes, it comes down to jobs for that gets a senator votes. I believe that the LCS ships have demonstrated their capabilities although not yet in combat.

I understand the concern CPT Jack Durish. If, however, the states these senators represent can increase production while simultaneously increasing employment and longevity of employees, it could give the economy a shot in the arm.
However, if competing production and deadlines cause builders to start "taking shortcuts" in order to match or exceed competitor, it could cause deficiencies.
If these are the types of things that need to be brought to the table, I think they should be addressed, but they should begin having them sooner than later.

Thanks SSgt Robert Marx for making us aware that a group of bipartisan US Senators are hoping to reverse the trend of the previous SEC DEF who reduced the objective of Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) from 52 to 40.
I hope that National Security Strategy will be the primary driver for the size of the fleet. Mid-to-long term threats would be addressed by any LCS being built in the near future.
It is interesting that Sens. Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio of Florida; Richard Shelby and Luther Strange of Alabama; Tammy Baldwin and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin; and Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow of Michigan have come to together to support this effort.
I hope they come together to support the confirmation of the yet to be named SEC NAV nominee. In the meantime it would be great to see bipartisan support for the DoD principal nominee and SEC Army and SEC USAF.
