Effects huge, but nothing compared to what we would have faced with an invasion. Saw excerpts of this film annually during SAC aircrew training. Thought provoking for sure, but both cities are thriving in 2017, so the use of nuclear weapons isn't end of civilization as opponents like to portray.

Hard to find comparisons but one I did find says the eruption was the equivalent of around 20,000 of the bombs used against Japan. That's big for sure. Flew over area at around 25,000 feet about a year after the fact. You're right, it's inspiring.

My late father in law would have been part of the invasion force, He had already made beachhead landings on 3 Japanese held Islands including Okinawa and Guam. If that had happened He may well have not survived and My wife would never have been born. My Dad who is now 91 was there for the occupation of Japan and saw Hiroshima in its aftermath, that is something He doesn't still doesn't talk about.

Flew missions from both Okinawa and Guam during Vietnam thanks to bravery of your father in law. Visited Hiroshima in early 70s on R&R, sure it was nothing like your dad saw. Seemed like a normal city if you didn't think about what happened there.

LTC Orlando Illi - it's alright it's in the past much has changed but I respect that generation I'm even part of the unit that my great aunts sons served in the 100th Infantry Battalion and I'm proud to wear that torch patch of the 100th-442nd. I want to prove worthy of my grand parents lineage.

My father, David R. McCarter, who recently passed in May 2023 at age 97 was a WWII US Navy Veteran of the Asiatic Pacific Theater on Minesweepers and Destroyers. He was also there for the occupation of Japan and say Hiroshima in it's aftermath seeing first hand the destruction to the entire city and people still dying and suffering the effect of radiation. My late Father in Law a WII Veteran of the US Army made the beachhead landing via landing craft of three separate Japanese held Island including Guam and Okinawa. He was to be part of the invasion force on Japan but after the bombs dropped didn't have to do that which may well have saved His life which He lived to be 89 Years old.

My Dad also got recalled to active duty during the Korean War but ended up stationed at Pearl Harbor Navel Station in Hawaii. After WWII He had got married and ended up with a wife an little boy, Me and once He got housing in Hawaii We joined Him there. Before going into combat in WWII My late Father in Law served in Hawaii and even helped maintain the main guns taken off the USS Arizona which were placed on Army short batteries. Myself with the US Air Force and My Mom's Aunt, a US Navy Veteran of WWII, Korea and Vietnam also were station in Hawaii at later dates.
