This is a travesty to allow her to plead down to only dereliction of duty. She was the central point of failure and blames "unspoken culture" for not following the COs standing orders. What about all the violations of the Rules of the Road. I hope she is haunted every night for this clear case of 7 counts of negligent homicide. I hated standing watch on the bridge. I was never very good at it, but I always kept one thing in my mind - it was solely my job up there to keep my ship mates safe. I can't believe that she didn't sound the collision alarm, or that someone on the bridge didn't. At the very least give your shipmates a warning... I don't know if you read that they administered a ROR test to the officers, and they only had a 59% average score. Our training system is broken, plain and simple.

LT Brad McInnis I did not catch the ROR test. Did we not all have to pass that test with like an 80% every year or so. I know when I was at ATG that is one of the things we did during the ships training phase.

LCDR (Join to see) - It was in one of the other articles posted on RP. 80% was passing, this was a test that was administered after the accident as part of the investigation.

LCDR (Join to see) , LT Brad McInnis The passing grade is now 88% for RoR at ATG. It is a big complaint from us at ATG that there is no certification assessment for OODs and such outside of the the MOB-N (which mostly focuses on the NAV team) area and the Nav Assessment.

SCPO (Join to see) - You guys still haven't gotten an OOD qual program at ATG? We were working on that when I was there and my wife was a TLO! Just kidding, I know a lot of good ideas never make it to fruition, although, some would say having a qual system for the most important watch stander is a necessity. The pushback argument we always got was that the "Qual" was done through the ISIC ship handling competition. Doesn't really matter if I can nail a ship landing at a pier, if I have hit every ship on the way there.... Well, that is why I was an Engineer...! Have a great one Chief!
