No surprise that the USAF will differentiate itself from the US Army by using different color name tape, patches, and insignia.
In the 1960s, most military services used similar fatigues in ground warfare including various camp patterns during the Vietnam War.
In the 1980s through about 2001 many military services used BDUS with different color name tapes.
"The U.S. Air Force is adopting the Army's Operational Camouflage Pattern as its new combat uniform and will begin incrementally phasing it in beginning Oct. 1, [2018 beginning of FY 2019]. The Air Force will differentiate itself from the Army by using a "spice brown color" for velcro patches, name tape and insignia.
In the early 21st century, the military services used GWOT largesse funding to go off in different direction. This made it more challenging to match camo uniforms to Organizational Clothing and Individual Equipment {OCIE) camo patterns.

That’s interesting .. I was in before the AF got their own. I had appropriated a couple sets of woodlands in ‘&2 via Combat ops
We went to Africa with them .. As soon as I got mine I got them into the wash machine with the all-color
Bleach did it 2x.. hung out to dry at my girl friends where I washed them. I didn't want To look like a NFG when at the hanger.. one of the other cooks that had the NFG look said I had to turn them back in after we got back.. I might have them deducted from my allowance..(hmm... another barracks legal eagle wanna-be)

I got to keep them.. When I got back.. I reached out to a Marine bud to see if he could look sround and find some Marine Covers like they had from Post Nam days and with out the EGA. He found them and came by a short time later.. I laundered them a couple times to give that “been around” look.. another bud got me AF logo from before they came out with a revised Wings logo .. imagine the AF logo as a OD stencil to go on the cover and the TAC logo as a camo patch. when I had the command logos and the RDF logos
sewn on, I asked if they could go ahead and sew them on and not be concerned with taking the pockets off. The guy at the parachute shop said they wouldn’t be serviceable.. “of course I can still sticks few pens and a thermometer in them, so they're Still serviceable!
I had them back the same day.. graphics got me a stencil of the AF crest.. and a ink and roller and ink pad.. gee I forgot about those..
the other guys had the Army style
Covers. We left them with some MREs.. for that supper that day..
We got e’thing cleaned up and packed up and on pallets.. We flew out that afternoon.. When we got to Germany they wanted us to change to our AF utility uniform..
“Were we supposed to bring those” one of.the Airman Cooks asked .. that was good.. they went along with his innocence.. and dropped the matter.. So we flew home in the woodlands.. we had 8 hours.. not too many places we could go.. Couldn’t go to NCO club,
Not after 1500.. There was the German side of Ramstein.. Hmm how long can we wear utilities, BDUs there.. I called... they had a sub-club in the basement..!e’thing the club upstairs had(no dinners, they did have hot sandwiches... hey, good enough !... We had to walk a couple blocks, Our bus didn’t Go on the German side..
We got finished eating.. their
Master-at-Arms(?) said the Airmen ranks weren’t authorized in the NCO club.. “We’re just leaving”
We said, which we were.. He was nice.. got on the phone and called our transportation people to send s truck.. how nice, they came right to the club door.. The TSGT with us asked the driver if the bus driver could have brought us to the door..
“The buses can’t come.. but this is a regular transport truck(AF business) the bus is like a taxi, competition to the taxis you see lined up.. We didn’t delve further..
well, they did pick us up around at the Service dock.. Gee.,if them taxi guys ever knew.. The truck pulled up at the little terminal and we all got out.. there were some German taxis lined up across the street ..
one of the Taxi drivers asked where we been.. our TSGT said we had s confidential meeting at HQ (he’d told him in German) and he took out his AF survival knife and stone and proceeded to sharpen his knife... That German didn't walk but ran back to his car.. and buried his face in his newspaper.. He stayed that way until we left out the other door. (I was last to look out the streetside door before I went to the flightline side door).

When I was in I wore the Cook whites and Utilities for non-cook duties... I used sta-Press no irritation from starch.. it did the same job.. then I was told sta-Press had a flammable chemical.. So why’d the commisary and exchange sell it. Hmm somebody jealous because I don’t have the itch ?.... So I checked out and that’s all it was... jealousy... and told them so.. “why’d you go behind my back
Why didn’t you accept what I said as gospel” they said... well TSGT C______ if you have a prob with that.. go talk to the LT. Our Food Service Officer.. she told me about sta-Press... “ So... who gave you permission to jump “chain of command?” He asked. I didn’t... I was in the kitchen and she noticed
My discomfort and I told her too much starch in the whites... and she told me about sta-Press.. so that was that... I was at Commisary and seen it at $.69 a can. There were 14 cans and I left 4 , $6.90 I paid and a little bit for
Surcharge... Had a couple other guys bought cans at the bx and they paid $1.35 approx...
